Developing mental maths skills is crucial to becoming confident in maths. To encourage the children to develop a quick recall of number facts, we have introduced the Maths Passport, a journey around the world focussed on mental maths skills. Your child will start on a given country, which has several objectives to master (see attached sheet). Once they have mastered all of the objectives, they will receive a certificate in assembly and they can then move on to the next country.

To achieve a skill, they need to be able to recall the answer immediately. At first, you may find that they need to work out the answer, but over time, with lots of practise, they should begin to recall the number facts from memory. Once they can answer questions instantly, they have achieved that particular skill.

During mental maths, the children will be working on some of the objectives within their country, but we would really appreciate it if you could practise these skills at home. This can range from playing online games such as ‘Hit the Button’ to asking quick-fire questions on the way to school.
